A series of programmes designed to help us live healthier, whilst living longer.
This new highly beneficial series of programmes will be running throughout 2023.

WHY ACTIVE HEALTHY AGEING?
We are living in an ageing population…
It is imperative that we find proactive ways to help people live healthier whilst living longer.
If we fail in this, those living longer will have a greater need for NHS & Social Care services, potentially overwhelming both. The NHS, by its very nature is reactive, it is designed to function in that way. To try to also incorporate proactivity, whilst possible in small ways, is very unlikely to be achievable. We must find smarter, more consistent and focused ways for this to become standard practice. Therefore, the foundations of The Reach for Health Centre will focus on being proactive in helping those who are ageing become and remain healthier for longer.
The range and combination of programmes that form our Active Healthy Ageing project were developed by our team during 2022 and are now proven to be of enormous benefit in resolving health, fitness and mobility issues in those of us who are simply getting older!
This leaflet outlines the content and type of programmes that we will be running from 23rd January 2023. Access to them is either by contacting the Centre directly or by referral from your GP or the Social Prescriber at your GP Practice. Although generally we will be operating classes, none of the classes will be large and the various activities in the programmes will largely be tailored to the individual, even though in a group setting.
The programmes are available to anyone. Surely it is the duty of us all to take responsibility for ensuring that we maintain as healthy a lifestyle as possible as we age, not only for the potential improvement to the wellbeing and happiness that we will gain but also to help protect our precious NHS services from becoming overwhelmed.

Healthy, active and happy. Medical research tells us that as we get older our bodies and minds need more care and attention. The elements of the Active Healthy Ageing programme are the key to us living our best possible life as we age and life presents us with challenges. As we get older it is more important than ever we spend time on looking after our most prized assets, our body and mind.
Research is clear that people who are active, engaged and smiling have healthier happier latter years with less impact from chronic diseases. This also leads to less medication and most importantly seeing less of their GPs!
My own experience, as a GP, is that patients who are active and have a positive outlook on life are much better able to manage the problems such as arthritis, loss of balance, tiredness and poor sleep.
This programme is for everyone! Whether you are 30, 50 or 90+, or anywhere in-between this programme has something to offer you.
I can only emphasise my experience looking after older people for 30 years.

Induction
The Reach for Health Centre’s Active Healthy Ageing programmes are designed to help you remain healthier, fitter and feel younger for longer. For you to begin a programme we need to know about your health status, needs and aspirations, we will therefore ask you to complete a medical questionnaire prior to attending.
These can be obtained from our reception or downloaded from the link below.
CLASSES
FuncFIT Functional Fitness Class
– Twice per week, 12 week programmes
If you’re feeling really unfit, haven’t exercised for a long time and don’t like the gym environment, then this group session that is supervised by experts is the right one for you. Simple easy exercises set in a way that can be personalised for you. There’s no safer way to start exercising!
£10 per week for 2 sessions or
£110 in advance for the full 12 weeks
Strength and Balance Class
– Once per week
A group session precisely aimed at stopping you from falling. You will regain lost strength and re-learn how to cope with daily activities without the fear of falling.
£6 per session
Get Up and Go Class
– Once per week
These are exercise classes focused on helping older adults to remain active, independent and healthy. It includes a 45 minutes group exercise class and a speaker at each session to talk about a health topic. There will be time afterwards to have a drink and a chat. These classes are run together with Sport Northamptonshire.
Tai Chi Standing Class
– Once per week
Described as the most powerful of all the martial arts and as a form of moving meditation. Tai Chi offers so much more than you imagine, it can help you gain balance, strength and mobility in a stress relieving gentle pace like no other form of exercise.
£6 per session
Tai Chi Seated Class
– Once per week
Suited to people with mobility or disability problems that wish to get some beneficial exercise along with
like-minded people. Taught by a highly experienced local teacher who has been long associated with The Reach for Health Centre.

Pulmonary Classs
– Once per week, 12 week programmes
Do you often get out of breath or struggle with your breathing? If so, this class is perfect for you. It focuses on exercise which is safe and effective for those with respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD. These will help you on your journey towards an easier life by managing your breathing. After an initial assessment you will take part in specialist exercises in a group setting lasting one hour, classes will be held once a week. The first 12 week programme will be subsidised by Sport Northamptonshire.
First 12 week programme: £3 per session, £36 for full programme
Following programmes: £6 per session, £72 for full programmes
Weight Management Class
– Twice per week, 12 week programmes
Our weight management classes are delivered in a fun and friendly environment. They are designed to help you achieve your goals and become a better version of you! They include exercise classes, cooking demonstrations and nutritional advice.
£10 per week for 2 sessions or
£110 in advance for the full 12 weeks
REFERRAL
Whilst GP referral to these programmes is not essential, it is beneficial as we will receive relevant medical information about you. To access the programmes either ask your GP or the Social Prescriber at your GP Practice to refer you. If you wish to self refer please contact us directly and talk to one of our team.
As with any organisation, we have to charge for the services we provide.
We have kept the cost of the programmes as low as possible.
