Specialist Classes

Our fitness and rehabilitation coaches are on hand to help you get back to exercise after suffering and managing long term conditions including Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, heart disease and Cancer. Our staff are trained to help you make positive lifestyle changes and encourage participation in exercise.

Tai Chi

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition practised as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. The form followed at Reach for Health is especially beneficial for those with joint and muscle challenges; the added strength gained improves stability and aids in falls prevention. We offer two classes at Reach for Health: Standing and Seated Tai Chi. Both classes promote improved balance, posture and coordination as well as aiding relaxation and reducing anxiety through mindfulness.

Seated Tai Chi

Seated Tai chi allows those otherwise unable to take part with the opportunity to benefit. This includes those who have COPD, Parkinson’s, MS or who have had a stroke. The seated class works the upper body whilst increasing core strength and stability making it particularly suitable for those with chronic back pain. Learning the form also helps with memory and concentration. The same form is taught in both classes, which allows attendees to switch from one to the other as they wish once they have learned the form.

Parkinson’s Group

This Group meets weekly and is funded by the Parkinson’s Society. It focuses on gentle controlled exercise for those suffering from Parkinson’s. This includes seated Pilates style exercises and resistance training along with coordination exercises done to music.

Cardio-Rehabilitation Classes

Our classes cover Phase 4 cardiac rehabilitation. This follows on from the hospital led rehabilitation programme
that patients receive following a cardiac event. Our ongoing programme provides people with known coronary heart diseases (myocardial infarction, coronary artery
bypass graft, percutaneous coronary intervention and stable angina), the opportunity to benefit from supervised
exercise sessions and education on lifestyle changes.

COPD Classes

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) covers a range of lung conditions including asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Our pulmonary rehabilitation
programme generally follows on from a hospital discharge but it covers anyone with a chronic lung condition whose ability to be active is affected by breathing difficulties. In
addition to tailored, supervised exercise the class covers information and education on managing on a day-to-day basis to maximize quality of life.

Pilates Classes

Pilates is a well-known gentle form of exercise focusing on controlled movements to lengthen and strengthen core muscles within the body. This class is particularly
of benefit to anyone with lower back problems or neurological problems such as Parkinson’s Disease or Multiple Sclerosis.

Sports & Remedial Massage

Tamsin Wallace is a Sports & Remedial Massage therapist who has had her practice based at Reach for Health for a number of years. Tammy has a passion for helping people recover from injuries such as back strains, frozen shoulders or surgery, using remedial massage and mobilisation to speed up the recovery process. Her work complements everything that goes on at Reach for Health and all that it provides to Northamptonshire and surrounding counties. Virtually every system of the body is affected by massage, either directly or indirectly, mainly because each and every part of our body is linked in one way or another. Remedial massage is a deep tissue method of treating the body; it helps to relieve pain and stress in the musculoskeletal system by increasing blood flow and thus bringing oxygen and other nutrients to the muscles, connective tissue and bones. This is part of the natural way in which it can help reduce pain and speed up the body’s own healing system to restore normal function.
